An ages-old Polish legend tells of when Mary Magdalene went to the sepulcher to anoint the body of Jesus. Upon her arm she bore a basket of eggs that she had intended to offer to hungry peasants. When she arrived in the village and uncovered the eggs, lo, the pure white shells had miraculously taken on a rainbow of colors. Fittingly, the egg is a symbol of rebirth.
