The tradition of the ''Lover's Eye'' originated from the lovesick Prince George of Wales, given to his star-crossed love, Maria Anne Fitzherbert, who he was forbidden to marry according to royal law. He had sent to her a passionate letter with a parcel holding a very small painting of his right eye. This became one of the greatest symbols of love and adoration in the 18th century.
